AstraZeneca is to increase its global shares by up to 60 per cent, following a public consultation report by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) that revealed the company did not meet its growth targets for the year to end 31 October.
The EMA released its report on Monday (2024) in which it said the company’s growth was "very modest".
The EMA concluded that there had been no progress in improving its portfolio of drugs, and said the company had been “targeted for a new indication”.
The report came on the heels of the company’s announcement in late May that it would seek approval for the first generic version of the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, which was to be launched in December.
The EMA said the drug will be marketed under the name Levitra (vardenafil).
In September, the EMA said it had approved the generic version of Viagra, but the company had not yet reached the market size of the branded version.
The report was based on an analysis of data from the company’s market research company, Xenical Inc., which said it had been “on track” to achieve its target of selling an “approved indication”.
The report also revealed that there were no major clinical studies showing the drug could be effective for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
